About Wyre ForestSituated in the
North East part of Worcestershire between Birmingham
and Worcester, the district of Wyre Forest enjoys the benefits of both
rural and urban environments. Covering an area of approximately 48,500
acres, the principal towns are Kidderminster, Bewdley and Stourport
upon Severn, and the surrounding rural parishes of Rock, Wolverley and
Chaddesley Corbett.
Wyre Forest offers all the benefits of rural living, but its inhabitants need not suffer excessive commuting times as the district is within 20 minutes drive of the Midlands Link motorways, has a direct rail link from Kidderminster to London, and is within 45 minutes drive of Birmingham International Airport and its routes to the rest of Europe and North America.
Wyre
Forest can
also boast some
of the best attractions in the Midlands, including the West Midlands
Safari Park and the vintage Severn Valley Railway. Kidderminster is a
growing industrial town with a population of 54,644 (1991 Census) and
is the area's main commercial heart offering industrial, shopping,
office and leisure facilities.
World renowned for its carpet industry, the town is continuing to diversify its commercial activity led by internationally successful companies such as Monitron, Reilloc and Sealine. There are also thriving office and retail sectors as the town centre recently underwent an extensive £60 million river and canal side redevelopment, which included the addition of a brand new state-of-the-art Further Education College. The town also saw additional shopping, entertainment and leisure facilities opening throughout 2003. The small Georgian town of Bewdley is situated on the banks of the River Severn at the edge of the Wyre Forest. With a population of less than 10,000 this picturesque town boasts an entertaining museum and tourist information centre, delightful gardens and riverside walks, outstanding architecture and a selection of small shops catering for locals and tourists alike. Just outside the town are the woodland walks at the Wyre Forest Discovery Centre, a popular visitor attraction and educational centre in what remains of the ancient Royal Forest that is believed to have stretched from the Clee Hills in the west to the Clent Hills in the east. The lively riverside town of Stourport on Severn is the setting for an exciting range of family entertainment, including funfairs, arcades and a riverside park. The regular population of 18,739 (1991 Census) is increased throughout the year by regular visitors from all over the Midlands. The town of Stourport boasts its share of historical interest too having once been the busiest inland port in the Midlands after Birmingham and during the late 1700’s it was home to iron and brass foundries, a vinegar works and various barge and boat building yards. Lying at the junction of the River Severn and the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal, Stourport is a popular base for river cruising and narrow boating enthusiasts. |
